CIDI 2025:
CIDI 2025:
In this paper, we explore the connection between style and design in the context of shōjo manga, understanding style as a cultural product of social phenomena, as pointed out by Hebdige's subcultural studies (1979), and focusing on the symptoms of style (Gombrich, 1995) present in the selected Japanese comics. We relate the dissemination of fashion information, the social context and the graphic style of some shōjo manga works, under the bias of multimodality and social semiotics from the research of van Leeuwen (2005) and Siefkes and Arielli (2018). Our premise is to demonstrate the thesis of these authors, understanding the semantic dimension of the graphic style through a historical overview of shōjo manga.
