The myth of Design History in light of the current historiographical debates

Lima, Rafael Amato Bruno de ;

Artigo:

Taking as a starting point the discussion proposed by Clive Dilnot in “The State of Design History” (1984), essay published in the Design Issues Journal, this paper investigates how the idea of “myth” in Design History is established among historiographical discussions. In order to understand this issue, the fourth edition of the Journal of Design History, published in 2009, is also analyzed. This edition gathered four essays which dialoged with Dilnot’s writings. Besides, reflections about these discussions in the Brazilian context is considered through perspectives presented by Priscila Farias in the paper written for the Journal of Design History in 2015. Finally, recent historiographical studies, published in 2021 in the book Design Struggles: Intersecting Histories, Pedagogies, and Perspectives, are also mobilized. The main argument is that the “myth” of Design History writing has been questioned as far as present issues, such as feminism and non-Eurocentric Design practices, provoke new perspectives on the past.
