Implementing the Santa Marta Urban Grammar a pedagogical tool for design computing in architecture

We present a tool intended to enable non-expert users to apply and manipulate ashape grammar, SMUG, which encodes the urban design of informal settlementssuch as favelas. Such tool, the Interpreter, was developed considering thatstudents would be its main users, and therefore we consider this grammarimplementation to potentially be a multipurpose pedagogical tool since itsupports conveying knowledge about urban design, shape grammars andparametric modeling using Grasshopper. This paper focuses on the developmentof the Interpreter and discusses the results of its use in a design studio, which canbetter inform subsequent iteration as well as other courses and schools.
