The introduction of digital fabrication technologies in Latin America facesdiverse, heterogeneous and decentralized conditions. After several years, therewas not a comprehensive perspective on the situation in the region. The goal ofthis paper is to present a project called ``Homo Faber: Digital Fabrication inLatin America'' and some of its results. The project comprehends the creation of adatabase that led to researches and exhibitions about digital fabrication indesign, architecture and building construction in Latin America. The questionsthat guide the investigation try to understand which factors contribute and limitthe potential of automation in material processes towards 4.0 industry.
