Anatomy of a Building Introducing interactive RGB lenses for architectural data visualization

Anatomy of a Building Introducing interactive RGB lenses for architectural data visualization

Weissenböck, Renate ; Symeonidou, Ioanna ;

Article:

The paper proposes an alternative way to present architectural information, usingcolor filters - specifically RGB lenses - as an interface to emphasize or reveal theinternal structure or hidden logic of an architectural artifact. In an interplay ofanalogue and digital techniques, it employs rules of color blocking in order tohighlight certain aspects of complex buildings, urban plans, or interiors, whichcannot be discovered using conventional visualization methods. In this research,the authors developed an interactive RGB lens-interface and techniques forsuperimposed color visualizations that can be used for an enhanced visualizationof the internal structure of a building. By applying physical or digital colorlenses, viewers can perceive individual layers of project visualizations, in order tounderstand certain tectonic or construction logics, such as skin, structure orinfrastructure. Based on existing bibliography, the paper presents the workflowfrom drawing, 3D model or photograph to RGB visualization, through a series oftest case scenarios applicable to the field of architecture and design.
