In the context of structural engineering, machine elements and structures are often subjected tothe torsional loading. In this regard, there’s a broad dissemination of softwares based on differentnumerical techniques, which allow the solution of complex problems. Nevertheless, it’sworth noting the importance of a consistent theoretical foundation, which allows an adequate interpretationof results as well as the development of a general physical awareness regarding thephenomenon in question. This article presents a numerical investigation on rectangular sectionelements with fixed-free supports submitted to torsion. The simulations are performed usingANSYS Mechanical and show great conformity with the analytical solution of stresses foreseenby the elasticity theory. At last, the numerical tests are parameterized by varying the b/a ratio, falling in linear manner into the theoretical predictions for narrow profiles.
