The panorama of type design teaching in Pernambuco: first impressions

This paper presents the first results of a research that aims to understand the diverse experiences of teaching type design in the state of Pernambuco. For such purpose, some interviews were conducted with local teachers in the context of college and technical degree design courses. The practical and methodological aspects of the research are exposed, like the use of Activity theory as a tool for defining the topics to be approached in the interviews, as well as in the phase of data analysis. We address aspects such as each subject’s relation with the typographic universe, and with the disciplines taught by them. From the gathered data, it is possible to raise issues such as the influence of the first contacts with typography on the teaching practice of the subjects. Finally, this paper proposes a reflection on the effectiveness of pedagogical resources used for teaching typography, according to the purposes and expectations mentioned by the teachers.
