Textbooks’ design

Full Article:

Communication Design is the branch of knowledge on which the communicative strategy of the textbook depends, and is responsible for the organization of the information and its user-friendliness. The twofold aims of this study were to make a qualitative assessment of the communicative design of textbooks for the second cycle of basic education and to devise a set of general principles for this design. The methodology adopted was of a mixed nature, qualitative and non-interventionist, and relied on Literary Criticism, Direct Observation, questionnaires, interviews and the sounding out of experts for validation of the results. Literary Criticism was key to contextualizing the State of the Art and national and international legislation was consulted, together with the principal bibliography. The defining of assessment criteria was based on pedagogic principles and communicative clarity, with emphasis on the physical presentation, organization of the information, layout, typographic legibility, typeface, the pedagogic function and relevance of illustration and the ratio of text to illustration. Although results varied from discipline to discipline, there were, however, certain common features, such as the legibility of the main texts, inappropriate text/illustration ratio, pedagogically superfluous illustration, and page layout with a confusing range of graphics.
