Pleasure as an artistic medium as understood by William Morris

COSTA, Valter ; PORTUGAL, Daniel ;

Artigo:

Artigo:

William Morris, central figure for design history, argued that art was the expression of a worker’s pleasure in labor, whatever that labor was. Such proposition was inspired by the writings of English art critic John Ruskin, but it took on particular interpretation and meaning in the work of Morris. This article examines how the understanding of pleasure in labor was manifested in the designer’s thinking, seeking to comprehend its profusion of meanings, but also its contradictions. Morris’ assertion can only be grasped if looked through notions that come before it, such as his connection with Ruskin’s work and his socialist affiliation. For this reason, the present article proposes to contextualize Morris’ political and artistic experience (both theoretical and practical), which will lead to an in-depth perception of his thoughts on pleasure in labor.
