O tempo imediatamente anterior a um acidente e o período em que ele realmente ocorre podem ser tão breves quanto um piscar de olhos. Dentro deste intervalo de tempo diminuto, sensores e sistemas de processamento fornecem as melhores performances a serviço da segurança dos ocupantes. Por exemplo, eles decidem em milissegundos se medidas emergências de segurança, como airbags, precisam ser acionadas. A ativação adequada destes mecanismos de segurança no veículo oferece a melhor proteção possível aos ocupantes do veículo. Estes equipamentos eletrônicos otimizam a proteção contra lesões em colisões, bem como em caso de capotamentos. O sistema é composto por sensores periféricos, uma unidade central inteligente – a unidade de controle do airbag – e a bolsa. Este trabalho técnico tem como objetivo fornecer informações a respeito deste sistema, demonstrando que o airbag não é apenas o enchimento das bolsas, mas sim um conjunto de componentes que funcionam de forma coordenada no veículo, salvando vidas.

The time immediately preceding an accident and the period in which it actually occurs can be as brief as the blink of an eye. Within this diminutive time span sensors and processing systems provide powerful performance in the service of occupant safety. For example, they decide within milliseconds whether life-saving measures such as airbags need to be triggered. The appropriate activation of this safety mechanism offers the best possible protection for vehicle occupants. These electronics devises optimize the protection against injuries in collisions, as well as in case the vehicle rolls over. The system consists of peripheral sensors, an intelligent unit central – the airbag control unit - and the bag. Based on the sensor signals, it detects the strength and direction of a collision and can activate the mechanisms. This technical paper aims to provide information regarding the system, demonstrating that the airbag is not just the inflating of the bags, but a set of components that work in a coordinated way in the vehicle, saving lives.
