Seguindo o trabalho seminal de Imbs e Wacziarg (2003), o presente artigo objetiva avaliar os processos de especialização e diversificação ao longo de meio século (transição estrutural) da indústria de transformação do Brasil e de suas Unidades da Federação, investigação ainda não empreendida na literatura. Dessa forma, procura-se averiguar se as transições estruturais dessas economias apresentam a regularidade empírica encontrada pelos autores (um formato de U, isto é, diversificação da estrutura industrial até certo ponto de renda per capita e, posteriormente, uma maior especialização). Para tanto, construiu-se uma base de dados inédita de séries anuais (1966-2017) com consistência interna e intertemporal que permitem análises comparativas ao longo de tempo. A partir da aplicação do método não-paramétrico Lowess foi possível encontrar formatos de curvas bem diferentes entre os estados brasileiros, indicando uma ampla heterogeneidade estrutural e regional dos dados analisados.

Following the seminal work of Imbs and Wacziarg (2003), this article aims to evaluate the processes of specialization and diversification along half-century (structural transition) of Brazil’s manufacturing and its States, investigation not yet undertaken in the literature. Thus, seeks to ascertain whether the structural transitions of these economies present the empirical regularity found by the authors (a U shape, that is, diversification of the industrial structure to a certain point of per capita income and, later, greater specialization). Therefore, an unprecedented database of annual series (1966-2017) was built with internal and intertemporal consistency that allows comparative analyzes over time. Using the non-parametric Lowess method it was possible to find very different curve shapes between Brazilian states, indicating a wide structural and regional heterogeneity of the analyzed data.
