Rede Globo de Televisão (Globo Broadcast) has recently aired the soap opera Lado a Lado (Side by Side). This show recreated the atmosphere of a certain time-space: the city of Rio de Janeiro during the First Republic (late XIXth century/ early XXth). Each episode would disclose to the viewers, side by side, the ideal city and the real one, the culture of the elites and the culture of the streets. The process of redeveloping imagery. The costume designer Beth Fillipecki was assigned with the challenge of creating the dream. The costume design project enhanced the illusion of temporality, mapping the characters feelings, and placed them within their social groups. Filipecki researched the descriptions of revolutions of the imagery in modernity. Thus, the shapes and the appropriate color palette of colors, were developed, not only according to that period in History, but also to the emotional aspects of the characters, signalizing the differences among spaces and practices. Fashion proposes the mediation between the individual and the collective, articulating dimensions. The costumes of Lado a Lado made visible the representations of the protagonists of the plot, highlighting attitudes, new values, and habits that, thereafter, slowly changed the feminine universe in Rio de Janeiro at that time. There are references to the American artist Loïe Fuller, who revolutionized the stage setting using resources of electrical lighting. She would disappear from the stage under colored lights and mysterious veils. Her performances inspired Jules Chéret who, among other artists, registered her on the bills of the Folies Bergère. Her repercussion in Rio de Janeiro arose in the choreography and costumes worn by the character Isabel Nascimento, performed by the actress Camila Pitanga. The overlapping of discourses, and the diversity of graphic-visual references resulting from the costumes of Lado a Lado has brought onto the stage the proposal of a trip made of illusions woven in poems.
