The use of renewable fuels is pointed out as one of the best solutions to decrease the greenhouse gases emissions due to the balance in the CO2 chain. In this context, ethanol stands out as one of the best renewable fuels. Furthermore, the direct use of hydrated mixtures of this fuel can improve the energy balance, reducing the fuel cost. The increase in water concentration leads to lower indicated efficiencies. However, the water promotes an increase on knock resistance. This enables the use of higher compression ratios, improving the engine conversion efficiency. The modifications in this parameter to use wet ethanol mixtures is not well established. In this way, this study, aims to evaluate the impact of compression ratio increase on heat release and performance parameters. Mixtures containing 4, 10, 20 and 30% of water in ethanol in volumetric content were investigated. The tests were carried out at 8 bar BMEP and 1800 rpm. As a result, the increase in water concentration allowed operation at minimum spark advance for best torque (MBT) for compression ratios up to 14.5.
