O período pós-parto pode ser o único momento oportuno para fornecer contracepção às mulheres. Como a maioria das mulheres é sexualmente ativa 6 semanas após o parto, a ocorrência de uma gravidez não intencional poderia vir a ser um problema. Uma alternativa viável para evitar uma gestação indesejada nas puérperas seria o dispositivo intrauterino de cobre (DIU) por ser um método duradouro e que não interfere na lactação.
