Conversation on the sidewalk: innovation and cultural reference in handcrafted products

This article reports a participative activity centered at the design intervention in the group of artisans, named NART (Center for Crafts UFCG), and focused on the strengthening of the cultural reference handicraft. The goal of this activity is highlighted in the practice of Social Design that allowed the exchange of information and techniques capable to improve the artisanal production processes, generate new products and identify local cultural factors. The project began with the training of designers by the artisans concerning the technique chosen, Patch Apliquê. Then, it were performed the mapping of the group, the presentation and discussion of the action objectives and some dynamics lifting data related with symbolic aspects of the region, childhood, customs and collective memory. The construction of the iconographic identity included the active participation of the artisans and the concept was inspired by a habitual action that they used to practice when younger and nowadays it make part of the nostalgic values ​​of a country town, the conversation on the sidewalk. The result generated 16 products with different compositions, chosen by each artisan, as well as a collection that composed the Exhibition Conversa na Calçada that occurred in the Rectory building of UFCG.
