The electrification of powertrains represents a significant paradigm shift in the automotive industry, evolving from fossil fuel reliance to electric propulsion systems, passing through different types of hybridization. Since the inception of mass-produced combustion vehicles in the late 19th century, internal combustion engines have dominated the automotive environment, albeit contributing to rising carbon dioxide emissions and global warming. The 1990s saw the emergence of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as viable alternatives, prompting investigations into their efficiency and performance characteristics. This study compares two electric propulsion architectures, focusing on the role of gearboxes in BEVs? powertrains. Despite BEVs? electric motor?s consistent torque delivery and instantaneous power transmission from standstill, challenges persist at high speeds since traditional electric motors exhibit a pronounced decline in torque at elevated speeds, which are troublesome when greater power is needed. This work sheds light in this matter by including gearboxes in BEVs? architecture.
