This research consists on an investigation on whether it is possible to convey characteris tics of the plot of a soap opera through typography, when in the context of it’s visual identity in it’s various usages. Analyzing the identities of nine soap operas produced by Rede Globo, throughout the years of 2011 and 2012, searching to evaluate typography and its influence in the message perceived by the spectator and target audience from every related product sold under a soap opera’s logo. Soap opera’s logos were chosen as object for it is presumed they por tray visually the core concepts that define the plot, and this significance may derive partially from the use of typography. To study it in this particular context may reveal a lot about it’s understanding and potential of representation for the average spectator. In the beginning a taxonomy of the logos was carried out. Five designers with PhD or Master’s degree were asked to analyze the graphic elements constituting each visual identity, filling out a table with key-words to designate the abstract qualities and immediate associations caused by the images. The key-words most used were the basis for a test taken on the second phase of the study by a group of self -proclaimed spectators of Rede Globo’s primetime broadcast. In conclusion, both the abstract qualities observed by the experts and the general public matched and could be easily related, most times, to the synopsis of the soap opera. Accor ding to the visible qualities referred to by the experts a large slice of the associations made originated in the typography.
