Typographic articulation in digital medicine inserts: a study on Anvisa’s Bulário Eletrônico

Hammerschmidt, Christopher ; Spinillo, Carla Galvão ;

Full Article:

Problems concerning graphic presentation of medicine inserts strongly contrast with the function of these documents regarding the access to information about health. A substantial part of the deficiencies shown by the leaflets refer to typographic articulation, especially in questions about legibility and the definition of information hierarchy. This paper seeks to compare typographic guidelines from the literature to specifications for visual presentation of medicine inserts according to RDC n. 47, a resolution published in September 2009 by the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). We selected a probability sample of 30 digital medicine inserts, available from the Bulário Eletrônico database to perform the analyses. The assessment of these documents provides a background to discuss typographic articulation in digital medicine inserts and points out some pathways for future work.
