This paper aims to discuss and understand how information design can aid the communication of environmental and social aspects of a product in packaging, through its graphic design. The aim is to contribute to the promotion of consumer awareness and empowerment of users to make positive choices regarding sustainability. Therefore, a literature review on design, sustainability, packaging and information design is presented, and finally completed the research on existing tools for communicating environmental and social characteristics in labels and packaging. The results also point to few tools explored in order to guide the development of an informational graphic design in this scope. Among the tools presented, is the use of infographics as a storytelling about the life cycle of the product and a environmental and social scorecard similar to the nutritional facts used in food products. The adoption of these resources can facilitate the communication of sustainable features of the product, although there are limitations on the use of these instruments, such as space restrictions and the lack of labeling standards for measurement and reporting of environmental and social impact, which demonstrates the importance new studies and practical applications in this field.
