The information bulletins of the Instituto de Teoría y Urbanismo (ITU), Architecture School, published between 1951 and 1972 under the direction of Carlos Gómez Gavazzo constitute a graphic grouping of great interest. Resort to the use of graphics, organization charts, diagrams and specific symbologies, above and beyond the quality exhibited as visual communication elements, have an interest as graphic devices of information design. The interest of the bulletins as an antecedent for a history of infographics in Uruguay arises from the fact that they seek to reflect the activities of the ITU and, at once, they constitute a graphic program communicating those activities outlining some of the principles present in current conceptualizations of information design. The type of graphic used had originated a significant debate in the midst of the 4th International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM). Otto Neurath, renowned especially in Graphic Design circles for his Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education) was to have a leading role in this debate. At a first approach, the hypothesis could be proposed that that symbology was, to modern urbanists, a visualization form exactly and objectively reflecting that which was provided by quantitative and qualitative information required by the science of urbanism. Nonetheless, a closer look reveals the recurrence in the utilization of those diagrams for a multiplicity of topics due to their potential for having information emerge and producing a type of knowledge that would not be visible without them.
