Artigo Completo:

The construction process involves the consideration of many different design requirements. The possibility of the translation of those requirements as formal rules opens up the opportunity of using BIM technology to use computers to check in which extent a virtual model of the building follow those requirements. This article aims to analyze the barriers and opportunities for the use of BIM for the automated check of production requirements during the design phase, particularly in terms of the modeling process, the content of the requirements and their translation as formal rules, the types of production requirements and the identification of those requirement which translation as rules is not possible of feasible. The research adopted case study as the research strategy, which was conducted in a large construction company, and involved the analysis of project requirements used by the company and the possibilities for their translation as formal rules. The main conclusions of the study are related with the connection between rules formulation and the level of development of the model, the difficulties derived from the dynamic nature of production requirements, and the feasibility of translation of certain types of production requirements as formal rules and their automated checking.
